6. It helps to reduce the accident rate. The life of any individual road user is important. Good roads help to reduce the rate of accidents that may come as a result of bad roads.

7. Highways increase the lifespan of a vehicle: Under poor road conditions tires, brakes, clutches, and other vehicle parts suffer when moving on a bad road. But when the roads are good the vehicle’s parts function well over a good period of time. 

8. Highway makes life better in various ways: such as reducing travel time for: Residents; workers; students; accessing health services; tourist centers and marketplaces. It also reduces the cost of travel by motorcycles and vehicles as well as reducing the transportation cost for industries thereby reducing production costs, while increasing passenger services and more importantly reducing traffic accidents. Indeed, the highway brings significant improvements for man in many ways.

National Highway: 

National Highways (NHS) is the primary responsibility of this Ministry. Every year, the Ministry receives proposals from various State Governments/Union Territories (UTs) for the declaration of State roads as new National Highways (NHs). Occasionally, the Ministry declares some State roads as new NHs based on connectivity requirements, inter priorities, and funds available.

On the basis of well-established principles, State roads are declared new National Highways;

  • Roads that run across the length or breadth of the country are eligible for designation as new National Highways.
  • Interconnecting adjacent countries, national capitals, state capitals, major ports, non-major ports, large industrial centers, or tourist attractions.
  • Providing significant reductions in travel distances and boosting economic growth in a hilly and isolated region through arterial roads.
  • By reducing travel distance and resulting in substantial economic growth, arterial roads enable large tracts of the backward area and hilly regions to be opened up. These roads earn a 100 km National Highways grid.



Green Highways:

Union minister of road transport & highways and shipping Shri Nitin Gadkari launched the inexperienced highways (plantation, transplantation, beautification & protection) policy, 2015 at a characteristic prepared in new Delhi nowadays. The intention of the coverage is to sell the greening of dual carriageway corridors with the participation of the network, farmers, the non-public zone, NGOs, and government institutions.

Shri Pon, Minister of State for Road Transport & Highways and Shipping addressed the conference. Radhakrishnan said that the initiative was a noble one and demonstrated the government's concern for the environment. Various initiatives have been taken by the present Government to cut pollution, including biofuels and e-rickshaws, and the recently launched Green Highways Policy promotes roadside plantations.

As Shri Vijay Chhibber, Secretary, Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, stated at the conference, the vision of the policy is to involve the local communities in the plantation process. According to him, the National Forest Policy calls for 33% of the geographical area to be covered by forest or trees. However, only 22% of the notified forest area is covered by trees. It is possible to bridge this gap through the implementation of the new Green Highways Policy, he added. According to him, the emphasis is not only on the number of trees planted but also on whether they live and are useful to the local communities.
